Instructor: Korma Aguh-Stuckmayer

Country: Nigeria (often referred to as "The Giant of Africa")

Tribes: Igbo

Dance Themes: Ukwu (waist) and Masquerade Dance

Introduction:

The Igbo Tribe, the third largest in Nigeria, is located in the southeastern part of the country. Known for their love of dance, community gatherings, and zest for life.

Rhythms and Music:

Key instruments in Igbo music include the Oja (flute), Shekere (tambourine), and Udu (a large wooden pot with a small opening). Students will learn the "Ukwu" dance of Owerri (waist dance) and incorporate various styles from neighboring Igbo lands. Additionally, they will explore Atilogwu, a dance form showcasing strength.

Showcase Dance Performance:

The showcase will feature dance moves from the Igbo lands, with some movements tailored for stage performance. Performances will include a wedding dance, characterized by soft, flowing movements, chest isolations, waist movements, and intricate footwork. The masquerade dance( strength dance) will be more vigorous and follow a lead-and-follow format.

At weddings, bridesmaids and their families often perform a wedding dance, followed by community dancers providing additional entertainment. The masquerade dance will be adapted for our presentation, with no involvement of spirits, focusing on fun and performance.

Through these performances, students will explore themes of acceptance, community, and gratitude, gaining a deeper appreciation for the diverse traditions and cultural heritage of Nigeria.

Costumes and Attire:

Traditional Igbo attire for these dances features beautiful, flattering fabrics, often adorned with beads and makeup. Some performers may wear white makeup on their faces for added effect.
